Concept of a Job Has Changed
by Tran, Harry ~ September 5th, 2009. Filed under: Rants n Raves.Recently I’ve been talking to more people, workers, and have been getting more people telling me of how happy they are that they have a job at the moment.
I was speaking with a fellow coworker during a not so easy going work day and while we were both frustrated I couldn’t help but notice how my coworker would keep saying, “Hey at least I have a job.” Another person I spoke with is starting a new job in a week and will be driving about one and a half hours each way daily to get to work. While I may clearly argue that driving 50 miles and three hours in traffic would be a big no-no for me in choosing to accept the job this person is gladly going to put up with that tedious commute because as he puts it at least its a job.
It is becoming ever apparent that if the recession has done nothing else good for our culture than at least it has caused an effect of changing the perception people have with their work.
Not long ago people were often very mobile when it came to their work choice, a far cry from the Japanese style of staying with an employer til retirement. If a boss treated them wrong here they could easily go to a competitor and work for them. But things are different, that competitor might be in a worst off position than your current company. The concept of jumping ship for a bigger payout are also no longer around. People seem to finally be happy about what they have even if it isn’t deemed the ideal.
