How Can Someone Live Without Money?

After reading about The Man Who Lives Without Money it got me thinking whether or not it would be possible to live without the reliance on money.

It really hit me as a conversational point to discuss whether or not it would be feasible to live without money. For money is just a belief system that was created where we trust that tiny pieces of printed paper will hold value and can be exchanged for goods and services at a later date without the system of barter, isn’t it?

I couldn’t see myself being able to live a life completely devoid of any money. I wouldn’t know where to begin, and without a coach to guide me in this lifestyle I don’t think it would be possible to get started. Another note is that my familial ambitions to raise a family, support my future wife and children as well as my parents who will one day drop out of the work force would prohibit me from being completely money-free. Even if it were by some means possible for me to plan a lifestyle around not using money, it would be near impossible to convince those around me that I won’t be contributing any more money towards enriching their lives.

Could I go eat at a restaurant with my best buddy and expect them to pick up the tab? Where would I live, rent free in my parents basement until I’m 50? How about my gifts that I get for Christmas to give people, would they appreciate my kind gesture of picking up flowers from the local park instead?

While I don’t see myself trading my life up completely for a lifestyle that doesn’t require any money at all, I do feel that I am on a course to living a lifestyle that requires less of it. And by that I mean being frugal, and living a life within my means rather than living a lifestyle which requires my future earnings to support my current tastes, and desires.

What do you think, would it be possible for you to live a life free of money?
