Did Your City Cancel July 4th Celebrations

by Tran, Harry ~ July 6th, 2009. Filed under: Quick Blast.

I was talking to a buddy of mine earlier who had gone to Portland, Oregon to celebrate the Fourth of July Festivities, unfortunately as he described Portland had canceled their main fireworks display. In a sign of the sagging economy many cities have decided to pull their fireworks show offline this year. Fortunate for us here in Seattle we were able to see a firework display, although with the fact that these shows are pegged at the cost of $40,000 maybe our city could have done better with this money instead of shoot off a few fire rockets into the sky.

The show none the less continues to draw its crowd to the festivities, but something about the show has become lacking in the amount of and quality of fireworks being launched into the night sky. I remember years ago where I would go see firework shows, albeit this was in San Francisco and not Seattle where the displays were something less than extravagant, what I saw the other night was complete child’s play compared to what I had seen before and it may be a sign that was occurring around all of us without many of us even realizing it but we may have been celebrating our successes a little bit too extreme without regards to our actual bank accounts.

This past 4th of July weekend is a good sign in my opinion because for too long it was almost as if our governing bodies felt invincible to all external forces of the economy and it simply was not true, they realize that $40,000 saved could actually be used elsewhere and they can throw that into their budgets for later use rather than throwing it away in a fireworks display.

What are your thoughts about your city’s fireworks display or lack of one during the July 4th weekend?
