There Goes the Budget for Education, Again
by Tran, Harry ~ November 12th, 2008. Filed under: My Writings.State colleges in California to turn away B average students
So if our government is passing along $700 Billion to Wall Street, and California is asking for $7 Billion, how come my Alma Mater, San Francisco State University, isn’t getting any help?
California is asking for $7 Billion from Fed
Just released is news that the CSU system, one of California’s public higher education systems, which consists of 23 campuses has just announced that it will tighten the number of applicants it will allow onto its campuses. This means that students which meet the minimum requirements for acceptance may get rejected. This shrinking budget, means more students will have to fill into less classroom space, so my question is where is the government’s allocation of the budget to its education system?
Treasury shifts its focus towards aiding Auto industry
At a moment where the Big 3 Auto companies are begging for a piece of the bailout, and some politicians are considering lending them up to $25 billion dollars at reasonably competitive rates, there is no talk about revamping our school system and putting more funds where there is a great need.
Has our country given up on our future?
We need brighter minds that are taught proper business conduct and ethics, what we don’t need right now is large pay outs to those in positions of power which were not acting ethically, who weren’t operating competitively, and also companies which are producing legacy products. Did we bailout the typewriter when computers came out? If not than why are we bailing out the Pickup Trucks and SUVs? I believe that the newly unveiled Chevy Volt would have been a competitive vehicle had the company foreseen these circumstances and acted as a first mover, but they didn’t so they might have missed out on large volume sales. Our government should not be asked to jump in at every second to help out these companies who don’t compete effectively. Chevy should not get a big loan to keep themselves afloat for the next year until they are ready to launch the Volt, because they’re too slow to get their product to market.
Our education system needs a huge kick start especially when our CSU system is completely underfunded. Classroom sizes are tightening up, this means that students won’t be able to take as many classes per semester, and will take them longer to finish college and get a proper high quality education while they’re there.
